Email: [email protected] Dengue represents an increasingly important public health challenge in Puerto Rico, with recent epidemics in 2007, 2010, and 2012–2013. Although recent advances in dengue vaccine development offer hope for primary prevention, the role of health professionals in the diagnosis and management of dengue patients is paramount. Case definitions for dengue, dengue with warning signs, and severe dengue provide a framework to guide clinical decision-making. Furthermore, the differentiation between dengue and other acute febrile illnesses, such as leptospirosis and chikungunya, is necessary for the appropriate diagnosis and management of cases. An understanding of dengue epidemiology and surveillance in Puerto Rico provides context for clinicians in epidemic and non-epidemic periods. This review aims to improve health professionals’ ability to diagnose dengue, and as highlight the relevance of recent advances in dengue prevention and management in Puerto Rico. Soil disturbance of wildlands sites during construction or erosion often results in loss of nutrientrich topsoils and decreased plant available nitrogen (N). When soil organic matter is removed, the content, decomposition and cycling of organic N within soils is also decreased, reducing long-term sources of plant available N. Yard waste composts are a potential resource for replacement of deple...
متن کاملDoxorubicin Toxicity in Perfused Rat Heart Decreased Cell Death at Low Oxygen Tension Patricia
The purpose of these studies was to test whether 02 tension influences cardiotoxicity due to doxorubicin. Isolated hearts were perfused by the method of Langendorff at constant pressure with Krebs-Henseleit buffer saturated with 5% CO2 and either 95% or 20% 02. Toxicity due to doxorubicin was evaluated from changes in heart rate and from uptake of trypan blue by nonviable nuclei. Heart rate was...
متن کاملRare human leukocyte antigen genotype in two siblings with type 1 diabetes in a Japanese family clustered with type 1 diabetes
Multiplex families with type 1 diabetes are important for identification of rare variants that cannot be identified in case-control association studies. The very low incidence of type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population, however, makes identification of such families difficult. We identified a Japanese family in which three members developed type 1 diabetes, and studied the genotype of the hu...
متن کاملInfluence of HLA Class I Haplotypes on HIV-1 Seroconversion and Disease Progression in Pumwani Sex Worker Cohort
We examined the effect of HLA class I haplotypes on HIV-1 seroconversion and disease progression in the Pumwani sex worker cohort. This study included 595 HIV-1 positive patients and 176 HIV negative individuals. HLA-A, -B, and -C were typed to 4-digit resolution using sequence-based typing method. HLA class I haplotype frequencies were estimated using PyPop 32-0.6.0. The influence of haplotype...
